Cemetery of Aviation Martyrs
Situated at the northern foot of Zhongshan Mountain in the vicinity of Wangjiawan, it was built by Aviation Administration of Military and Political Department of national government in 1932. Over 100 Chinese air-force pilots who sacrificed themselves during the anti-Japanese war and pilots of the former Soviet Union and USA in support of China during the anti-Japanese war were buried here. Destroyed during the anti-Japanese war, it was renovated and restored in 1995.
The Memorial Tablet
The main part of the memorial tablet, 15 meters high, is joined by two huge stone-based plane-wings of acute angles shaped like “V”, standing for fighter-planes and victory. Plane-wings are respectively engraved with “The tablet in memory of aviation martyrs during anti-Japanese war” inscribed by Zhang Aiping, former minister of the Ministry of National Defense of the People’s Republic of China. The tablet ensemble is in the shape of a fan composed of 30 black polished granites. The front and the back of each tablet are engraved with names and date of birth of martyrs in Chinese, English and Russian, including 870 Chinese martyrs, 2197 American martyrs, 237 martyrs of the former Soviet Union and 2 Korean martyrs.
The Tablet-Pavilion
Ahead of the stair-case, there is a hexagonal tablet-pavilion on the axis which has a gray-stone tablet of 2.65 meters high. It is engraved with “Salvaging China through aviation”, the handwriting of Dr. Sun Yat-sen.
The archway
8.35 meters high, it has three rooms with four columns. The horizontal board is inscribed with eye-catching “The cemetery of aviation martyrs” in six regular characters. There is respectively a lounge covered with glazed green tiles behind, on the eastern side and western side of the archway.
