The Grand Third World Heritage Forum Held in the Scenic Area of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum
On July 3, the 5th anniversary of Ming tomb being included in the "World Heritage List", the third World Heritage Forum, the symposium "China's World Heritage Cause in the Context of Globalization" was held in the scenic area of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum.
The forum was co-sponsored by the Administration Bureau of Dr.Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum, Nanjing University, research association of protection and utilization of Nanjing cultural heritage and "World Heritage" Chinese periodical office, undertaken by the Institute of Cultural and Natural Heritage of Nanjing University and Ming Xiaoling Museum.
The forum aims to discuss how to correctly handle the interrelationship between world heritage protection and utilization in the context of globalization, and through the discussion to make people understand the equal status of different cultures so as to know the diversity of different cultures and make people understand and respect their native culture and other world heritages and their respective culture, as well as the multiple values of world heritage, so that people may better support and participate in the appreciation and maintenance of world heritage.
During the five years after Ming tomb being enlisted in the "World Heritage List", a lot of work has been done in the protection and utilization of Ming tomb, and the pattern with Ming tomb characteristics of the World Heritage protection and utilization has formed. In this forum, Ming Xiaoling Museum addressed to General Assembly the conservation on the pattern of Ming tomb protection and utilization.
It is learned that many Chinese representatives of institutions of World Heritage Management participated in the forum, such as: Qin Shihuang Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum, the Longmen Grottoes Research Institute, the Beijing Zhoukoudian site museum, Chengde City Cultural Bureau, Emei Shan scenic spot management committee, the Royal Mausoleum of Ming and Qing Dynasties of China. Besides, some senior scholars of the study on world heritage from Peking University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University and other famous colleges and universities joined in the forum; experts from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Chinese Cultural Heritage Research Institute, Suzhou World Heritage Research Center, and other research institutions and national, and provincial and municipal leaders also participated in the forum. Totally about 150 people were in the forum.
Since the letter of calling for papers of the forum was issued in November, 2007, until June 23, 2008, the General Assembly has received totally 60 papers from such well-known expert on World Heritage as Xu Songling, Chao Huashan, Liu Hong, and etc. These papers will form the "Third World Heritage Forum Compilation" for the delegates to discuss before the assembly and after the assembly the papers will be selected to form a collection to publish to the public.
