Wu Jinghen (1865—1953) who styled himself as Zhihui, was born in Wujin, Jiangsu province. Enrolled into Nanjin Academy in Jiangyin at the age of 25, he became a successful candidate in the imperial examination in 1891. In spring of 1901, he went to study at Tokyo Normal School of Higher Education in Japan. In May 1902, he worked as a teacher at Shanghai Patriotic Society. In 1903, he advocated revolution by making use of “Subao”(the name of a newspaper), leading to the “Subapo case” which forced him to seek refuge in Britain. In winter of 1905, he joined Alliance Association of China. After the Revolution of 1911, he came back to China and assumed the post as president of Tangshan University. After the failure of the second revolution, he went to Europe together with Cai Yuanpei. After Yuan Shikai died, he returned to China and founded “New Newspaper of Chinese Nation” together with Niu Yongjian in Shanghai, with himself as the editor-in-chief. The year 1920 witnessed the establishment of Sino-French University in Lyon, France, with himself as president. In 1923, he came back to China and became a member of the Central Committee of Supervision at the “First National Conference of KMT ” in 1924. Since then, he had been a member of this committee five times in succession. In 1927, he became a member of KMT government in Nanjing,a member of Provisional Political Committee of Shanghai and its acting chairman. Later, he worked successively as an editor of the Merchant Printing House, a counselor of the Palace Museum, a member of the Construction Committee, a member of the School Affairs of the Central School for Officers of the Land-Force and a standing member of the Construction Committee. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, he worked as a member of the Supreme Committee of National Defense and an academician of the Central Research Institute. In 1949, he went to Taiwan,becoming a member of the Appraisal Commission of the Central Committee of KMT. He passed away on October 30, 1953. Wu Jinghen was good at calligraphy, particularly at seal characters. With great accomplishment in his research into Chinese philology,he was once chairman of the Preparatory Committee of the Unification of Chinese Language.
